Hoko was ordained as a novice by Shohaku Okumura in 2005, from whom she has received dharma transmission. Her training includes time in several training temples in Japan, including international angos and seven months at Toshoji Senmon Sodo (Okayama), where she also took classes in baika, a type of Japanese Buddhist hymn created by Sotoshu in 1952. She has served as Milwaukee Zen Center's interim practice director since September, 2010. Her secular career as a professional communicator was spent largely in the nonprofit and public sectors.
